This Thanyarak Hospital, now called Thanyarak Institute is one of the 7 Institutes* located from North to South all over Thailand and specialised in drug dependencies and treatments. Thanyarak Institute, Thailand’s first and largest treatment center is overseen by the Princess Mother National Institute on Drug Abuse Treatment (PMNIDAT) and runs under the supervision of the Department of Medical Services under the Ministry of Public Health. This Institute situated in Mae Hong Son is the most northern one and is placed strategically near Myanmar's border to treat, among others, the raw Opium dependency which is in this region the main Opioid addiction and a geographic related issue due to its borders with Burma. Opium being relatively affordable, widespread and easy to find for people native to these region, it is not only a health issue but also a social and economical one. In fact those using it (smoke or drink)struggle participating in family life and support, have health issues and finaly find themselves rejected by their own society and in constant danger of beeing arrested. It's therefore worth to mention the efforts, care, infrastructure and human personnal involvements which were put in place to try to find a human solution meaning healing and not emprisoning. Regardless the chosen Hospital or Service, the personnel you meet at Thanyarak be it doctors, nurses or even administration employees have the sense of duty and human contact. They are very committed, rarely lose patiency nor give you the feeling to be superior and the patient second class citizen.... already increasing that way the patients chances of success ! . and all that with a salary of a European hospital trainee!
